Exterior Rust Stain Prevention

Homeowner Maintenance Instructions

Managing exterior rust prevention yourself

We offer full-service seasonal maintenance plans — but if you prefer to maintain your system yourself, here is what you need to know.

Rust prevention requires monitoring, testing, and seasonal adjustments.

Required testing equipment

To properly manage your system, you will need:

  • Hach Medium Range Iron Test Kit (For measuring iron ppm)
  • Hach 4–10 pH Test Kit (For monitoring acidity levels)
  • Rid-O-Rust Sequestering Agent
    • Formula 1
    • Formula 2 (Extreme — for pH under 6.0)

Your iron level and pH directly determine chemical dosage.

Understanding your chemical usage

Chemical demand is based on three primary variables:

  • Hours Watered Per Day (HPD)
  • Iron Level (ppm)
  • Gallons Per Minute (GPM) of your largest irrigation zone

Your 30-gallon tank provides approximately 143 hours of runtime before refill.

Example:

  • 20 GPM system watering 8 hours/day → refill every 7 days
  • 20 GPM system watering 4 hours/day → refill every 14 days

From April 1 to October 31, there are approximately 210 potential watering days

Reducing watering time and iron levels dramatically lowers seasonal cost.

Seasonal maintenance schedule

Proper startup is critical

Checklist:

  • Inspect pump and controls
  • Test water for iron, manganese, pH, hardness
  • Confirm correct chemical dosage
  • Replace worn parts preemptively
  • Disinfect well if iron bacteria is present

This prevents mid-season failure.

Ongoing Maintenance:

  • Monitor iron and pH regularly
  • Refill solution tank based on runtime
  • Clean filters
  • Watch for increased staining

If rust staining worsens:

  • Cartridges may need replacement
  • Well may need disinfection
  • System may need re-evaluation

Do not ignore early staining — it compounds quickly.

Improper winterization can cause freeze damage

Steps:

  • Drain exposed lines
  • Remove or protect feed pump
  • Store chemical injection pump indoors
  • Perform pump maintenance during off-season

Proper winterization ensures smoother spring startup.

Signs your system needs professional evaluation

Contact us if you notice:

  • Increasing rust staining
  • Slime buildup (possible iron bacteria)
  • Chemical usage rising significantly
  • Pump cycling irregularly
  • Pressure drops

Sometimes the solution is simple maintenance. Sometimes the underlying well conditions have changed.

Important cost considerations

As shown in the seasonal cost analysis, annual chemical cost can range dramatically depending on:

  • Iron ppm
  • Flow rate
  • Watering hours

Example comparisons from your worksheet:

  • Low demand system → ~$495 per season
  • High demand, high iron system → $6,000+ per season

Minimizing watering times and reducing iron concentration (when possible) is critical for cost control.
