Rust stains on and around your landscape can detract from its appeal. Well water that gets sprayed onto driveways, walkways, fences, walls and other exterior and outdoor surfaces can leave unsightly rust / iron stains. We are sure you have better ways to spend your time and money than battling rust stains caused by iron in your irrigation water. We have the products and experience in the treatment of New England water to keep rust stains from depreciating the value of your property.

Whether you are looking to remove those ugly iron/rust stains from your driveway, walkway, stonewall, or house siding and foundations, our company will be proud to guide you through and explain our process and our use of effective, safe products to provide the best results without the normal damage that can often occur with pressure cleaning systems.  Our process uses NO HIGH PRESSURE washing. We’ll then customize a Prevention System that best suits your particular cause of rust stains so that you will never have to deal with your rust staining issues again!

What Causes Rust / Iron Stains

Rust/Iron stains on driveways and sidewalks are a common problem for homeowners in the regional area. Rust/Iron stains on driveways, walkways, fences, house siding, etc are commonly seen where well water is used to run the sprinklers, as it is common for well water to contain high levels of iron. Fertilizers are another common cause of stains.  This happens when the iron in them oxidizes which in turn creates rust. While sprinklers and lawn fertilizer are the most common causes, they aren’t the only culprits of rust stains on your property.

Rust / Iron stains can also be caused by metal tools, downspouts, equipment, and vehicles, if left on surfaces such as concrete, walkways or house siding, creating plenty of possibilities for rust staining.  Stains like these are not only unattractive but are as difficult to prevent as they are to get rid of. Trying to treat and remove these types of stains is time consuming and often unsuccessful when done without the help of a professional.

Homeowner Maintenance Instructions for Exterior Rust Stain Prevention (ERSP) Systems

  1. For artesian wells, use RR1 Ridorust Preventer (blue). If you have a shallow well, use RR2 Rust Preventer Extreme (clear). Or, you may purchase a pH test kit and test the water. For pH below 6.0, use RR2 Extreme.
  2. When the level in the tank is low, use your iron test kit to test the level of iron in the water. Reference the chart to determine the amount of Rust Preventer to add:
  3. Feel free to add extra, since iron levels can fluctuate. Fill the rest of the chemical tank with water and stir. Cover. Run an irrigation zone. The tube should be spinning and dry, no leaks. Turn off the zone.

If you have a cartridge filter for sediment or iron, it may need to be changed out during the course of the season. Rule of thumb is to check it mid-season. Some filters have a gauge after on the outlet side. If you notice low pressure, check the cartridge by shutting off the pump and/or isolating the filter with valves and draining the pressure. Some filters have a red pressure relief button on top of the cartridges or a drain on the bottom for convenience. Use the plastic wrench to spin the bottom of the housing to the left until it unscrews and falls down. Have a bucket underneath to catch the water if you’re indoors. Take the old cartridge out, put the new one back in. Use silicone lubricant or replace O-ring. Make sure its seated in the slot before screwing the housing back in. Tighten with the wrench. Open the ball valves back up and check for leaks.

If you have an automatic purge valve, it’s a good idea to check the batteries. If the batteries die, the purge valve can be stuck open or closed and affect the system.

Roller tubes, ferrules, and duck bill check valves are subject to sediment and wear and tear over the season. The injection point can be unscrewed and a finger placed over the opening to ensure there is no backpressure leak. Same for the suction and pressure tubing at the roller.

“I was very happy with the results of Well Water Connection.  They showed up when they were supposed to and got the job done.  I had a serious iron stain problem and John took care of it like he said he would.  I also had a water treatment system installed that works well too.”
